John HarphamDuke University
Track 3: Seminar Leader Alan Mittleman John S. Harpham (Duke University) Chapel Hill, NC, graduated from Duke University in May with majors in French and Political Science. While at Duke, John was the Earl W. Sasser Angier B. Duke Scholar and served on the Independent Editorial Board of the University's student newspaper for four years, serving as its chair as a junior. He studied abroad in Paris, Oxford, and Dublin, worked as a research assistant for three professors, and took more than a Master's worth of graduate courses in his favorite subject, political theory. He is currently preparing an article for publication on the concept of the humanity of the slave as it emerged in South Carolina slave law from 1800 to 1860. John was also a member of the Club Baseball team, the Political Theory Colloquium, and the Angier B. Duke Scholarship Selection Committee. In February, he was elected by the student body to serve three years on the Duke University Board of Trustees as the 2010 Young Trustee. Most of the time, however, John can be found trying to play pickup basketball, wishing he were in Paris, or talking to someone about the history, and recent basketball supremacy, of Duke. This Fall, he will be applying to graduate programs in political theory, in preparation for a career as an academic political theorist.
